During both of our trips to the Florida Keys we booked chartered fishing trips through Bamboo Charters in Islamorada. Captain Matt Bellinger has a variety of trips for you to choose from and the expertise and experience to help you catch a Lunker (aka Big Fish). Rods, tackle, licenses, bait, water, ice and fish cleaning are included in the price; sunglasses, hats, and snacks are not. You are welcome to bring beverages of your choice along for the trip.
Bamboo Charters leaves from Angler House Marina. During our second trip we stayed in one of the Marina’s floating villas. The floating villas are custom made houseboats with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and full kitchens. The marina also has a pool and bar. Yes, I was worried I might get sea sick but luckily it was not a problem because the boat is anchored on a calm channel.
Along with catching a ton of fish, we also had a once-in-a-lifetime, National Geographic-type experience watching a Bottlenose Dolphin make a mud net. The mud net is created when the dolphin swims in a circle stirring up the mud around a school of bait fish. The bait fish jump out of the water to escape and into the mouth of the dolphin. We didn’t catch it on video but See Through Canoes did! Check it out!

Spanish Mackerel are a thrill to catch they will make your line scream. They’re really tasty too! #HolyScreamingMackerel
Matt Bellinger on the left, me on the right with my Tripletail. Tripletail like to hang out around lobster buoys and can be mistaken for a brown leaf. When fishing for this fish, cast your line just past the buoy and reel it in slowly, in order to hook this catch that is equally as tasty as the Spanish Mackerel.
Barracuda, which are a catch and release fish, will give you a fight when they hit. Just when you think you are about to land it, it will take off running, pulling out all the line you just struggled to pull in. You are going to want to give up, but don’t! The picture you will get to take when you land this ugly fish is worth the effort. Also, trust me when I tell you that if you catch one of these, your arms are likely to be very sore later. #FishingIsFitness

Sometimes you never know what you are going to catch.
A fantastic feast prepared with our fresh catch at a local restaurant. Ask your captain for a recommendation. Nothing like eating fresh catch! Delicious!
